Discovery-first and platform-first are different bets
The biggest category mistake is treating every data catalog as the same product. Amundsen is strongest when the core need is practical data discovery and searchable trust signals. DataHub and OpenMetadata both carry broader metadata-platform ambition, which changes the implementation and evaluation conversation.
That distinction matters because a team looking for faster dataset discovery may not need a wider governance platform immediately. But an organization trying to standardize lineage, metadata operations, and collaboration may outgrow a narrower discovery posture quickly.
