These tools solve adjacent but different networking problems
Cilium is strongest when Kubernetes networking, visibility, policy, and service connectivity need to work together as one platform choice. Consul is strongest when the team cares about service discovery and broader service networking patterns across cloud and hybrid systems. Kuma is strongest when the buyer already knows service mesh is the main requirement and wants a cleaner mesh-specific control plane story.
That distinction matters because category quality falls apart when service discovery, CNI, eBPF security, and service mesh all get collapsed into one vague bucket.
- Best Kubernetes networking platform: Cilium.
- Best service discovery and service networking baseline: Consul.
- Best mesh-specific control plane for Kubernetes and VMs: Kuma.
