Editorial take
Why it stands out
Compare Supabase when SQL and Row Level Security are central; compare Firebase when mobile SDKs and offline caches dominate.
Tool profile
Reactive backend-as-a-service with TypeScript functions, automatic client subscriptions, and built-in data storage for modern web apps.
Collaborative web apps where live UI state matters
Convex pushes you toward functions and queries written in TypeScript that run close to your data, with clients subscribing to live query results. It is a deliberate alternative to REST boilerplate and hand-rolled websockets. The tradeoff is adopting Convex's data and auth model instead of bringing your own Postgres everywhere—great for product teams, less ideal if you need arbitrary SQL reporting on day one.
